In German, the words for “the” (der, die, das) and “a” (ein, eine) change depending on what they do in the sentence. These roles are called cases.

1. The Nominative Case (The Subject)

The Nominative case is the “starting form” of a noun. It is the person or thing doing the action in the sentence. We call this the subject.

Example: Der Hund bellt. (The dog is barking.)

Why? The dog is doing the action (barking), so it is Nominative.

2. The Accusative Case (The Direct Object)

The Accusative case is used for the person or thing receiving the action. We call this the direct object.

Example: Ich sehe den Hund. (I see the dog.)

Why? “Ich” (I) am doing the seeing, and the dog is being seen.
