Gemeinsame Aktivitäten planen

Making Plans in German: How to Organize Shared Activities

Whether it’s a Feierabendbier (after-work beer), a weekend hike, or a cozy dinner, planning activities with others is a great way to practice your German. In Germany, being organized and clear about plans is highly appreciated!

Here is your guide to coordinating a perfect outing in German.

1. Suggesting an Idea (Einen Vorschlag machen)

Start by finding a common interest. Instead of just saying “let’s do something,” offer a specific suggestion to get the conversation moving.

  • German: “Was haltet ihr davon, wenn wir…”

  • English: “What do you think if we…”

  • Pro-Tip: Use the Konjunktiv II (would/could) to sound more polite and less demanding.

2. Setting the Date (Einen Termin finden)

Germans are known for their love of calendars. Pick a date and time that works for everyone, and don’t forget to specify the location.

  • German: “Wann passt es euch am besten?”

  • English: “When does it suit you best?”

  • Vocabulary: Vormittag (late morning), Nachmittag (afternoon), Abend (evening).

3. Assigning Tasks (Aufgaben verteilen)

A successful activity is a team effort. Clearly define who is responsible for what to avoid the “Who brought the snacks?” confusion.

  • German: “Wer kümmert sich um…?”

  • English: “Who is taking care of…?”

  • Example: “Wer bringt die Picknickdecke mit?” (Who is bringing the picnic blanket?)

Practice Dialog: Planning a Picnic (Ein Picknick planen)

Learn how to use these phrases in a natural conversation:

Speaker German English
Peter Hallo! Wir sollten mal wieder etwas zusammen unternehmen. Wie wäre es mit einem Picknick? Hello! We should do something together again. How about a picnic?
Anna Das klingt super! Wann hättet ihr Zeit? That sounds great! When would you have time?
Max Passt es euch am Samstagnachmittag im Park? Does Saturday afternoon in the park work for you?
Peter Ja, das passt. Wer bringt was mit? Yes, that works. Who is bringing what?
Anna Ich übernehme das Essen und bringe Sandwiches und Obst mit. I’ll take care of the food and bring sandwiches and fruit.
Max Ich kümmere mich um die Getränke und eine Decke. I’ll take care of the drinks and a blanket.
Peter Perfekt! Ich erstelle eine Gruppe, damit wir alle Infos teilen können. Perfect! I’ll create a group so we can share all the info.

Useful Phrases for Your “Chat-Gruppe”

If you are using WhatsApp or Telegram to coordinate, these quick phrases are lifesavers:

  • “Bin dabei!” — I’m in!

  • “Mir passt es leider nicht.” — Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for me.

  • “Sollen wir uns am Eingang treffen?” — Shall we meet at the entrance?

  • “Bis dann!” — See you then!

Grammar Note: Notice the use of “Wie wäre es mit…” (How about…). This is the most common way to make a suggestion in German without sounding too forceful.
