Mastering the AGB: Understanding German Terms and Conditions
In Germany, before you buy a bread maker online or sign up for a gym, you will be asked to check a box that says: “Ich habe die AGB gelesen und akzeptiere sie.” AGB stands for Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen (General Terms and Conditions). While most people skip them, knowing a few key German legal terms can protect your wallet and your rights.
1. Online Shopping & The “Widerrufsrecht”
When shopping online in Germany, the AGB will outline your Widerrufsrecht (Right of Withdrawal). Generally, you have 14 days to return an item without giving a reason.
-
Pro-Tip: Look for the section titled “Rücksendekosten” to see if you or the shop pays for the return shipping.
2. Signing Up for Services (Subscriptions)
Whether it’s a mobile plan or a streaming service, the AGB will define your Mindestlaufzeit (minimum contract duration).
-
Watch out for: Automatic renewals! Many German contracts used to renew for a full year, but newer laws have made it easier to cancel monthly after the initial period ends.
3. Contracts & “Kündigungsfristen”
Before signing any Vertrag (contract), find the Kündigungsfrist (notice period). This tells you how far in advance you must cancel before the contract renews.
-
Common term: Drei Monate zum Monatsende (Three months notice to the end of the month).
