Mastering the German Resume and Cover Letter: A Guide for Job Seekers
Creating a professional application in a foreign language can be daunting. However, in Germany, the structure is very standardized. By using a Muster (template), you can focus on your content rather than the formatting.
1. Der Lebenslauf (The Resume)
The German CV is almost always tabellarisch (tabular) and in reverse-chronological order. It should be concise, factual, and usually no more than two pages.
-
Persönliche Daten: Name, address, phone, and email. In Germany, it is common to include your date of birth and a professional photo.
-
Berufserfahrung: Your work history. Use bullet points for your Aufgaben (tasks).
-
Bildungsweg: Your school and university history.
-
Kenntnisse: Skills like languages (Sprachkenntnisse) and IT (EDV-Kenntnisse).
2. Das Anschreiben (The Cover Letter)
This is a one-page letter that explains why you are the perfect fit. It must be formal and addressed to a specific person if possible.
-
Einleitung: How did you find the job?
-
Warum dieses Unternehmen? Why do you want to work there?
-
Warum du? What are your top 2-3 achievements?
-
Schluss: Mention your earliest start date and your desire for an interview.
Example: Lebenslauf (Resume)
| Deutsch | English |
| Name: Maria Schmidt | Name: Maria Schmidt |
| Bildung: Diplom in Betriebswirtschaft | Education: Degree in Business Admin |
| Berufserfahrung: Marketing Manager | Experience: Marketing Manager |
| Zuständig für Strategieentwicklung | Responsible for strategy development |
| Teamfähigkeit und Belastbarkeit | Teamwork and resilience |
Example: Bewerbungsschreiben (Cover Letter)
German Text:
“Sehr geehrte Frau [Name],
Maria Schmidt.”
English Translation:
“Dear Ms. [Name],
I am very interested in the position of Marketing Manager. With my degree and my experience at Company ABC, I am well qualified. I developed marketing strategies that increased sales by 20%. I look forward to the possibility of an interview.
Sincerely,
Maria Schmidt.”
Top Tips for a “Sehr Gut” Application
-
Use Formal Pronouns: Always use Sie and Ihr/Ihre in your cover letter. Casual language is a “No-Go.”
-
Keywords (Schlagworte): Use terms from the job ad (e.g., Projektmanagement, Kundenbetreuung) so that automated systems or busy recruiters find them quickly.
-
PDF Format: Never send your resume as a Word document. Always save it as a PDF named
Vorname_Nachname_Lebenslauf.pdf.
