Mastering Discussions in German: Explaining, Debating, and Suggesting
At the B1 level, you are expected to do more than just order coffee. You need to be able to explain facts (Sachverhalte), express opinions, and offer counter-suggestions (Gegenvorschläge). This is a core part of the B1 speaking and writing exams.
Here is your guide to navigating professional discussions in German with confidence.
1. How to Explain a Situation (Sachverhalte erklären)
When explaining why something happened, the word “weil” (because) is your best friend. Remember: in a “weil” clause, the verb goes to the very end!
-
German: “Ich konnte nicht kommen, weil mein Auto kaputt war.”
-
English: I couldn’t come because my car was broken.
-
Tip: Use synonyms like “aufgrund von” (due to) for higher-level writing.
2. How to Discuss Issues (Diskutieren)
A good discussion involves stating your opinion (Meiner Meinung nach…) and reacting to others.
-
Agreement: “Ich stimme dir zu.” (I agree with you.)
-
Disagreement: “Das sehe ich anders.” (I see that differently.)
-
Example: “Ich denke, wir brauchen mehr Zeit für dieses Projekt.” (I think we need more time for this project.)
3. Making Counter-Suggestions (Gegenvorschläge machen)
If you don’t like a plan, don’t just say “no.” Offer an alternative using “stattdessen” (instead) or “wie wäre es mit…” (how about…).
-
German: “Ich schlage vor, dass wir stattdessen am Montag telefonieren.”
-
English: I suggest that we talk on the phone on Monday instead.
B1 Practice: Email Correspondence
Read this professional exchange to see these phrases in action. This is perfect practice for the “E-Mail schreiben” portion of your German test.
Email 1: The Suggestion (von Maria)
Betreff: Feedback zur Besprechung
Liebe Kollegen,
ich denke, dass wir einige Sachverhalte noch nicht genau genug besprochen haben. Deshalb schlage ich vor, dass wir einen weiteren Termin vereinbaren, um auch Gegenvorschläge zu sammeln.
Translation: Dear colleagues, I think we haven’t discussed some facts precisely enough yet. Therefore, I suggest we arrange another appointment to also collect counter-suggestions.
Email 2: The Agreement (von Max)
Hallo Maria,
ich stimme dir vollkommen zu. Eine zweite Runde wäre hilfreich, um alles besser zu diskutieren. Wann hättest du Zeit?
Translation: Hello Maria, I completely agree with you. A second round would be helpful to discuss everything better. When would you have time?
