Talking About Your School Years in German: Vocabulary & Tips
Whether you loved it or couldn’t wait to leave, talking about your Schulzeit (school years) is a fantastic way to connect with German speakers. From your favorite subjects to the teachers who inspired you, here is how to share your story in German.
1. Understanding the German School Types (Schulformen)
The German education system is unique because it splits into different paths after primary school. When talking about where you went, use these terms:
-
Grundschule: Primary/Elementary school (Grades 1–4).
-
Gymnasium: Academic high school (leads to the Abitur and university).
-
Realschule / Hauptschule: Secondary schools focused on practical or vocational paths.
-
Gesamtschule: A comprehensive school that combines these paths.
Grammar Tip: Use the preposition “auf” when saying you went to a specific school.
German: “Ich bin auf ein Gymnasium gegangen.”
English: “I went to a high school.”
2. Discussing Your Favorite Subjects (Schulfächer)
Everyone had that one subject they either loved or hated. Use the phrase “Mein Lieblingsfach war…” (My favorite subject was…) to start the conversation.
| German Subject | English Translation |
| Mathe | Math |
| Deutsch / Englisch | German / English |
| Geschichte | History |
| Biologie / Chemie / Physik | Biology / Chemistry / Physics |
| Sport | P.E. / Gym |
| Kunst | Art |
Example:
-
German: “Mein Lieblingsfach war Deutsch, weil ich gerne gelesen habe.”
-
English: “My favorite subject was German because I liked reading.”
3. Teachers and Extracurriculars
In Germany, teachers are called Lehrer (male) or Lehrerin (female). To talk about activities outside of class, we use the term Freizeitaktivitäten or AGs (Arbeitsgemeinschaften).
-
Der Lehrer / Die Lehrerin: “Ich hatte eine tolle Biologielehrerin.” (I had a great biology teacher.)
-
Die Schulband / Das Orchester: “Ich habe in der Schulband gespielt.” (I played in the school band.)
