How to Talk About the Past and Memories in German (B1 Guide)
In German, we have two main ways to talk about the past: Das Perfekt and Das Präteritum. While they both describe past events, they are used in very different contexts. Mastering this distinction is a “Meilenstein” (milestone) for any intermediate learner.
1. The Golden Rule: Perfekt vs. Präteritum
In spoken German, we almost always use the Perfekt (have + past participle) for daily conversation. However, for a small group of very common verbs, we prefer the Präteritum (simple past) because it is shorter and more elegant.
-
Use Perfekt for: Most actions (e.g., ich habe gegessen, wir sind gefahren).
-
Use Präteritum for: * Auxiliary verbs: sein (was) and haben (had).
-
Modal verbs: können, müssen, wollen, dürfen, sollen, mögen.
-
The verb werden (became).
-
B1 Tip: Instead of saying “Ich habe gestern Kopfschmerzen gehabt,” say “Ich hatte gestern Kopfschmerzen.” It sounds much more natural!
2. Essential Time Expressions (Zeitangaben)
To tell a story, you need to anchor it in time. Use these expressions to give your memories a clear structure.
| German | English |
| vorgestern | the day before yesterday |
| letzte Woche | last week |
| vor einem Monat | a month ago |
| früher | in the past / earlier |
| damals | back then |
3. Adding Color with Adjectives
A memory is only as good as its description. Use these B1-level adjectives to make your stories come alive:
-
unvergesslich (unforgettable)
-
eindrucksvoll (impressive)
-
wunderbar (wonderful)
-
aufregend (exciting)
-
merkwürdig (strange/odd)

Practice this dialogue with a partner to master the flow of past-tense conversation.

| Maria: Oh ja! Das war ein unvergessliches Erlebnis. Wir haben so viel erlebt. | Maria: Oh yes! That was an unforgettable experience. We experienced so much. |
| Lena: Erinnerst du dich an die Paella am Strand? Das Essen war einfach köstlich. | Lena: Do you remember the paella on the beach? The food was simply delicious. |
| Maria: Klar! Und die Flamenco-Show war so aufregend. Ich hatte so etwas noch nie gesehen. | Maria: Of course! And the flamenco show was so exciting. I had never seen anything like it. |
| Lena: Stimmt. Damals hatten wir keine Sorgen, wir waren einfach nur glücklich. | Lena: True. Back then we had no worries, we were just happy. |
